What is neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback, also called EEG Biofeedback, is a type of biofeedback that uses real-time display to monitor and measure brain activity.  Because the brain is electric, every thought that occurs, every emotion that is felt, and every sensation experienced is due to the electrical firing of neurons. This information is given back to the brain and allows the brain to regulate the nervous system at a more optimal level. Optimizing the functioning of the brain, and thus the nervous system, has many positive effects. Neurofeedback training targets optimal brain functioning. Medications that regulate the functioning of the brain may no longer be needed after successful neurofeedback, or they may be needed at a much lower dose. It is important for anyone taking prescription medications to communicate with their prescribing physician in order to monitor the most effective dose.

How is it performed?

Neurofeedback is a passive and painless process. Three electrodes are placed on the scalp using rubbing alcohol and electrode paste. The electrodes are passive and do not put anything into the brain. They simply measure electrical output of the brain. A movie or game is played through neurofeedback software. When the brain is operating in a training zone, the picture on the screen is big and clear. If the brain moves out of the training zone, the picture shrinks and may get cloudy. The brain makes adjustments on a subconscious level that allow regulation back to the training zone. The longer the amount of time the brain spends in a training zone, the more flexible and resilient the nervous system becomes.

How long is treatment?

The number of sessions can vary depending on the reasons for starting neurofeedback. 20 sessions is generally considered one dose. It may be less, 5 to 10, or up to 40 sessions. The effects of neurofeedback have shown to be very long lasting but certain situations may require additional “booster” sessions in order to maintain the gains made from the original sessions.
